Mario Kart World Tips: How I Got Mirror Mode Unlocked

Quick Overview: What Mirror Mode Is and Why You Want It

Mirror Mode in Mario Kart World flips all the tracks horizontally. It’s not just a visual change — turns feel different, muscle memory goes out the window, and it adds a fresh challenge even for veteran racers. Unlocking it isn’t obvious, though, and a lot of players are unclear about the exact requirements.

I’ve just finished unlocking it myself, so I’m breaking down the full process in this no-nonsense guide. If you're aiming to hit Mirror Mode without obsessing over 3-star ratings or finishing 1st every time, you're in the right place.

Step 1: Finish Every 150cc Grand Prix — Including the Special Cup

The first thing you’ve got to do is complete all Grand Prix events in 150cc, and yes, that includes the Special Cup. There’s a bit of confusion out there about needing gold trophies or 3-star ratings — I didn’t get either across the board and still unlocked Mirror Mode.

  • Tip: Just focus on finishing each cup. Even if you place third or fourth, the system still counts the cup as completed.

  • What counts: Every standard Grand Prix track, including Mushroom, Flower, Star, and Special.

  • You don’t need: Gold trophies or 3 stars per cup.

This step ensures that you've covered every main racing event on the highest standard difficulty before things get flipped around in Mirror Mode.

Step 2: Complete Every Knockout Tour in 150cc

Once your Grand Prix runs are complete, head into Knockout Tours on 150cc difficulty. These are another crucial part of the unlock process.

  • You don’t need to win 1st place in every tour.

  • I had a mix of placements: a few 3rd places, and even one 4th place.

  • What matters: Getting that completion checkmark on each 150cc Knockout Tour.

The game tracks which ones you've cleared, so make sure each tour is marked as done, regardless of the medal or rank.

Step 3: Tackle the Free Roam Mode Challenges

After you wrap up the races, it’s time to jump into Free Roam Mode. This part surprised me the most — Mirror Mode won’t unlock unless you check off a few specific tasks here.

You’ll need to find and complete the following:

  • 15 P-Switch Missions

  • 10 Question Mark Panels

  • 10 Peach Medallions

Let’s break each of those down quickly:

  • P-Switch Missions are scattered across different maps. You’ll usually activate them by hitting a visible switch and completing a timed task (collect coins, defeat enemies, etc.).

  • Question Mark Panels are little hidden tasks or mini-events marked with “?” symbols. Look for them in tucked-away spots or use the map to guide you.

  • Peach Medallions are collectibles placed throughout the free roam maps. You don’t need to get every one — just 10 total will do.

These tasks are mostly fun and not too difficult, but they’re essential. You can’t skip this step if you’re aiming to unlock Mirror Mode.

Step 4: Complete the Special Cup Again After All Tasks Are Done

Once you’ve finished all the items above, there’s one final stepreplay the 150cc Special Cup Grand Prix.

Here’s how it works:

  • Run through all four races in the Special Cup again at 150cc.

  • Once you cross the finish line in the final track, the credits will play again.

  • After the credits, you’ll see a new cutscene that confirms Mirror Mode is now unlocked.

Pro tip: You don’t need to place first in the Special Cup this second time. As long as it’s completed, you’re good to go.

Conclusion: Unlocking Mirror Mode is Easier Than You Think

To sum it up, unlocking Mirror Mode in Mario Kart World doesn’t require perfect runs or gold trophies. If you:

  • Finish every 150cc Grand Prix (including the Special Cup),

  • Complete all Knockout Tours in 150cc,

  • Track down 15 P-switch missions, 10 Question Mark Panels, and 10 Peach Medallions in Free Roam,

…then just replay the Special Cup again to trigger the unlock. The process takes some time but isn’t overly punishing. Now that you know what to do, you're just a few races away from racing everything in reverse.

FAQs: Mario Kart World Mirror Mode Unlocking

Q1: Do I need 3 stars on all Grand Prix cups to unlock Mirror Mode?
Nope! Just finishing the cups in 150cc is enough. Stars and gold aren’t required.

Q2: Can I unlock Mirror Mode without placing first in every Knockout Tour?
Yes. Even a 4th place that gives a checkmark counts toward completion.

Q3: Where do I find P-switch missions and Peach Medallions?
They're located in Free Roam mode across different maps. Use the in-game map to help you navigate.

Q4: Is the Special Cup required twice?
Yes. Once for normal 150cc progress, and a second time to trigger Mirror Mode after other tasks are complete.

Q5: What happens after unlocking Mirror Mode?
You’ll get a new cutscene, and tracks in Mirror Mode will become available, offering a flipped version of the originals for added challenge.
