Getting Started: Expedition 33 Is Packed With Secrets
If you thought a couple of playthroughs would show you everything in Expedition 33, think again. Even after nearly 100 hours into the game and restarting a few new runs, I’m still finding hidden weapons, powers, and special interactions. This guide will walk you through some of the best early game weapons, secret powers, and hidden unlockables you definitely don’t want to miss.
How To Grab One of the Strongest Early Game Weapons
When you first reach Gestral Village Arena during the story, pay close attention—you only get one shot at snagging a seriously powerful sword. Here’s the deal:
Your final match will pit you against Sel. Depending on which character wins this fight, you’ll get a different weapon reward. But not all rewards are equal.
Here’s What Happens Based On Who Wins:
-
Lun Wins: You get Traim. Honestly, not that impressive. You probably already picked it up earlier from the Ancient Sanctuary map. Winning here just bumps it to level 5—meh.
-
Gustav Wins: He gets Sakuram, but same deal—likely you already have it. Another upgrade to level 5 that doesn’t really help much.
-
Myel Wins (Best Choice): Now we're talking! If Myel beats Sel, she gets Melum, which is one of the best early weapons in the game.
-
Sel Wins: If you lose on purpose, Sel picks up Heon, a unique and strong weapon tailored to her style.
Why You Should Choose Myel To Win
Getting Melum early changes everything. Here's why:
-
Instant Level 4 Vuo Stance: Grants a 200% damage buff on the first turn.
-
Level 10 Bonus: Burn effects double.
-
Level 20 Bonus: Burn damage also deals double damage.
Even at just level 4, you can chain buffs and moves to smash through 10,000 damage right around level 10-15. Expedition 33 weapons guide tip: Melum makes Myel absolutely broken early on.
What Happens If You Let Sel Win?
If you let Sel win the arena fight:
-
She gets Heon, a weapon crafted from puppet limbs and parts.
-
Heon boosts Free Aim shots significantly:
-
Consumes Sun charge: Applies 5 Foral.
-
Consumes Moon charge: Deals 400% more damage.
-
At Level 10, consuming Sun or Moon also grants 1 AP.
-
At Level 20, base attacks generate Moon charges.
-
This weapon pairs beautifully with abilities like Sealed Fate, allowing massive damage stacking in just a turn or two. However, Sel’s Free Aim isn't her strongest move type, so it’s a bit situational.
Quick Tip:
Even though Heon is strong, for a smoother experience, go with Myel’s Melum early on.
Hidden Challenge: Beat Ono Punchro for Big Rewards
While still at Gestral Village, head into the back alley to find Ono Punchro—basically a One Punch Man Easter egg. He dares you to deal 9,999 damage in one hit.
Thanks to Melum, you can totally crush this challenge. Here's a recommended setup:
Myel’s Setup to Hit 10K+ Damage:
-
Roulette: Found in the same zone (200% damage buff).
-
Marking Shots: Adds an extra 50% damage boost.
-
Pierce Attack: Scales perfectly with buffs.
-
Vertoso Stance: From Melum (+200% bonus).
-
Buffs From Teammates: Use AP boosts and critical chance buffs.
Execute properly, and you’ll shatter that 9,999 target easily.
Unlocking Secret Powers by Collecting Lost Gestals
While adventuring, you’ll often bump into strange NPCs called Lost Gestals. If you gather at least 5 of them and send them to camp, you’ll unlock a secret power allowing you to destroy Painted Vines.
This opens up tons of new areas packed with:
-
Hidden weapons
-
Extra pictos
-
Additional side quests
Early Locations for Lost Gestals:
-
Outside Esqua’s Lair: Hard to miss.
-
Near Stonewave Cliffs: Keep right when paths split.
-
White Tree Island (After Esqua joins): Swim west from starting point.
-
North of Coastal Cave: Just circle the beach.
-
Path to Monaco Station: Base of a mountain near trees and jars.
Later Game Locations (Act 3+ and Flight Mode Required):
-
Endless Night Sanctuary
-
The Reacher
-
Endless Tower Island
Once you gather enough, turn them in at the camp for awesome rewards!
Rewards For Returning Lost Gestals
When you collect the Lost Gestals, you'll receive:
-
Four Gestal-themed haircuts (for all characters)
-
Multiple Color of Lumina items (for upgrades)
-
Pro Retreat Pictos (lets you flee fights instantly)
These bonuses really help with tougher battles later on!
Mini-Games and Hidden Beaches For Extra Fun
Keep an eye out for beaches in every area. They often hide Vibe Resorts, offering mini-games like:
-
Ping Pong
-
Beach Party Challenges
-
Racing mini-games
Completing these challenges can earn:
-
Swimsuit Outfits for characters
-
Rare Items (sometimes critical ones for upgrades)
Controller Tip: Some of these mini-games are way easier using a controller than a keyboard/mouse!
Farming Recodes and Chroma Catalysts
Running low on Recodes (used to reset characters)? Search for circular sprinting enemies near weird ground markings. Capture and defeat them to earn:
-
Recodes
-
Extra Lumina
-
Chroma Catalysts for weapon upgrades
There's usually at least one or two per map, sometimes more.
The Hidden Gestal Arena: Big Rewards For Big Challenges
Near the Flying Waters zone, you’ll find the Hidden Gestal Arena. Here’s what to expect:
Boss Challenges and Rewards:
-
Matthew the Colossus:
-
Reward: Last Stand Critical (100% crit chance while alone).
-
-
Bertrand Big Hands:
-
Reward: Accelerating Last Stand (Gain Rush when alone for faster turns).
-
-
Dominique Giant Feets:
-
Reward: Protecting Last Stand (Gain Shell when fighting solo).
-
-
Julianne Tiny Head:
-
Reward: Solo Fighter (Deal 50% more damage alone).
-
Pro Tip:
Combine these rewards with earlier bonuses like Melum and your 10k+ damage setup for unstoppable solo builds!
